“I spend a lot of time with the people I film. They show me things about my home, Palestine, and about myself. It’s not like working with actors”

Biography

Nahed Awwad is an independent Palestinian filmmaker based in Berlin. Awwad studied at the European Film College in Denmark and has worked in film and television since 1997. She has been making documentary films since 2002.

In 2020, she was the curator of the photography exhibition “Eyes of Gaza”. She has released eight documentaries in different genres: experimental, short and feature films.

Awwad’s approach and cinematographic perspective is to provide intimate access to the characters that appear in her films so that audiences can feel that they know (and understand) the people they are watching.

Her films have been screened at various international film festivals, including the HotDocs Film Festival in Canada, the Prague Human Rights Film Festival, the Dubai International Film Festival and the Vision du Réel Film Festival in Switzerland. In 2009, she was awarded the International Trailblazer-Middle East Award at MIPDOC.
