Shrinking Space
Shrinking Space is a documentary produced by Associació de Periodisme Fora de Quadre and Associació Hèlia that sheds light on the criminalisation of seven Palestinian civil society organisations—Addameer, Al-Haq, Bisan Center, DCI-P, UAWC, UPWC, and HWC—by the Israeli authorities. This case is not an isolated event but part of a broader strategy to suppress Palestinian civil society and silence those who document and challenge human rights violations under Israeli occupation and apartheid regime.
Through testimonies and expert analysis, the documentary explores how these organisations, despite international solidarity, face increasing restrictions, threats, and uncertainties that hinder their essential work in defending the rights of the Palestinian people. Shrinking Space also delves into the repression of activists by the Palestinian Authority, highlighting the multiple pressures faced by Palestinian civil society. Situating this repression within a global trend of shrinking civic space, the film raises urgent questions about the future of Palestinian civil society and the international community’s role in protecting fundamental rights and freedoms.
The documentary Shrinking Space premiered in Copenhagen, Denmark, on April 11, 2025, as part of the Global Health Film Days festival. After its run through human rights film festivals, the documentary will be available for online viewing in English and Spanish. It is now available in English with Catalan subtitles on 3Cat.

Together we can.
The project “Promoting Entrepreneurship Among Women Exposed to Multiple Forms of Violence”, also known as “Together we can”, is the result of the collaboration between Associació Hèlia and the Women’s Studies Centre (WSC). The project was implemented in Nablus (West Bank, Palestine) between 31 December 2023 and 30 March 2025, with funding from the Barcelona City Council.
The intervention supported fourteen Palestinian women from the Nablus governorate who are experiencing traumatic grief as a result of the Israeli occupation. Through this project, the rights holders received psychosocial support tailored to their needs and developed small-scale economic initiatives of their own.
This has been the first joint project between Associació Hèlia and WSC focusing on the economic empowerment of women participating in the WSC’s Women and Loss Programme.

With a camera in hand and a vision for the future, they’re not just taking photos — they are reclaiming space, building confidence, and asserting their independence.

We were told widows had no future. Now we run our own dairy business.
In a small Palestinian village under Israeli occupation, three women who lost their husbands to the occupation are rewriting the rules. With the support of the project, they have transformed grief into growth — creating a thriving dairy initiative that feeds their community and fuels their independence. Against all odds, they stand strong, proud, and unafraid to dream. Their work is not only about milk, cheese, and labneh — it’s about reclaiming dignity and showing that women can.

We were homemakers. Now we are businesswomen with a kitchen that empowers.
Set Al-Sittat is more than a kitchen — it’s a collective of Palestinian women who have turned personal loss into collective strength. With the support from the project, they have built a thriving food initiative that brings flavour, income, and pride into their lives and communities. Every dish they prepare is a declaration: women can rise, rebuild, and lead.
